I have been trying my hand at soap making for about 1.5 years now. Sometimes my soap turns out great but other times it, well lets just say, a volcano has erupted in my kitchen! After all my different recipes that I have tried, and I am not a big fan of Palm Oils so I don't use it in any of my soap recipes. That means that I have to take the Palm Oil out of some recipes and replace it with another oil then run it through the LYE Calculator to make sure I get the right amount of LYE and water in the overall recipe. One thing that I have learned over the year is that if you adjust any oil in a recipe, you must rerun the LYE Calculator or your soap will not turn out correctly. Different oil's require a different amount of LYE to turn the oil's into soap. So you want to make sure that you get the calculation just right or it won't turn out very well at all.
My biggest problem is getting my LYE and oil mixtures to the right temp and not having it set to fast. Still working on the right temps to mix them at. I have tried different temps - some work great and others well not so much. The temp that I have found works the best is 130-140 degrees. That seems to work great with my favorite recipe. I was able to mix my colors and essential oils in and still make it look pretty, tho I wish I could get my swirls down better. Practice is all it takes right!!!! Well I have made a goal to make a batch of soap everyday or at least every other day. I am a stay at home mom who works part time for a mortgage company and also homeschool my 8th grader. So some days are a little busier than others.
Its always a good idea to research how to make soap and make sure that you follow the LYE directions very carefully because it is a very hazardous chemical and can cause serious injuries.
